The world's lowest ranked country, American Samoa, claimed their first win in World Cup qualification since becoming a FIFA nation with a 2-1 triumph over Tonga on Wednesday.

Ramin Ott and Shalom Luani hit the target for American Samoa in the Oceania World Cup qualification stage one match, while Tonga pulled a goal back three minutes from time when Unaloto Faeo headed in a cross from Lafaele Moala.

Ott gave American Samoa the lead with a long-range shot just prior to the half-time whistle, and Luani sealed the win when he chipped Tonga goalkeeper Kaneti Falela midway through the second stanza, as former United States U-20 coach Thomas Rongen guided the island nation to an historic victory.

Elsewhere, Samoa edged the Cook Islands 3-2 in Apia. The visitors scored what appeared to be a dramatic late equaliser in the 85th minute courtesy of a Campbell Best half-volley, but Samoa struck back in the second minute of injury time thro ugh Albert Bell to secure all three points.

Best earlier restored parity when he tapped in a spilled free-kick in the 36th minute, while Samoan No. 10 Luki Gosche bagged a first-half brace of his own either side of Best's first goal.
